Since 2013, Cornell University's Department of City and Regional Planning has conducted a planning workshop in Surakarta (Solo), Indonesia. The workshop

exposes students to the complexity as well as the nuances of planning with poor communities in the Global South. It places a strong emphasis on engaged learning, research, and planning practice. The class collaborates with a non-governmental organization, Yayasan Kota Kita (YKK); 3 communities located along the Pepe River; and representatives from local government.
